Communications Advocacy Adviser (full time, permanent)

Overview

This role is responsible for delivering The Elders’ organisational and programmatic objectives through creative and impactful communications. Working closely with the programmes team, it is responsible for bringing our advocacy to life through written content, digital communications, collaborations, events, PR and media activity. It also plays a key role in our civil society engagement activity and coordinates the project management and team-wide delivery of The Elders’ communications output.  

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

Communications responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver innovative and creative ideas for using communications as an advocacy tool for reaching our programmatic objectives
  • Coordinate the communications planning for the organisation, helping to ensure we are strategically maximising external advocacy opportunities and internal priorities
  • Project manage longer-term, multi-channel communications activities for The Elders that help build understanding of our work with our priority audiences
  • Work with colleagues to ensure our major communications activities are targeted and measurable in terms of advocacy impact
  • Write and produce print, event and digital materials that deliver on our programmatic and organisational communications objectives. This will include event production, digital content and some op-ed and speech writing
  • Support and contribute to the delivery of daily digital content for the organisation

Engagement responsibilities

  • Seek out and secure opportunities for The Elders to augment the organisation’s reputation, relevance and legitimacy with our target audiences
  • Manage and maintain a network of organisations in order to advance our programmatic objectives through communications
  • Devise and deliver communications-led initiatives so that such organisations can collaborate with The Elders on shared advocacy and programmatic goals – creating amplification opportunities for their work and our messages.

General/internal

  • Report communications advocacy and partnership activity within the team and the wider organisation
  • Facilitate awareness and appreciation of the value of communications partnerships, planning and engagement within the wider Elders’ team and organisation
  • Undertake special projects or other tasks as requested by the Director of Communications.

Person specification

  • Over 7 years’ experience of communications advocacy and campaigning
  • A broad knowledge of and expertise in a full range of communications tools and advocacy tactics
  • An excellent project manager
  • Exceptional written ability with demonstrable experience of writing editorial texts for publication and/or senior public figures
  • A strong commitment to the mission and values of The Elders
  • Educated to degree level
  • Active Interest in world affairs, peace and human rights
  • Demonstrate ability to work in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment and to maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to multi-task and set priorities, and to work under pressure.
  • Excellent written and spoken English, other languages highly desirable.

Salary: £40000-£45000 per annum.
