The Elders welcome the appointment of Lakhdar Brahimi as Joint Special Representative of the United Nations and the League of Arab States for Syria, as announced on 17 August.
Lakhdar Brahimi’s appointment follows Kofi Annan’s decision not to seek the renewal of his mandate as Joint Special Envoy.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Chair of The Elders, said: “My fellow Elders and I congratulate Lakhdar Brahimi on his willingness to take on this difficult but vital task. We know it wasn’t an easy decision – we all know the circumstances described by Kofi Annan, when he announced that he would not continue his own mission. “Of course, we also know of the talent that Lakhdar can bring to this peace mission, and hope that all of those in a position to help end this deadly conflict will speak and work with him. We particularly urge members of the UN Security Council to support him fully in this assignment.” |
On 3 August, the Elders paid tribute to Kofi Annan’s courage and dedication in his Syria peace effort. On 10 August, they expressed their “deep moral outrage” at the collective failure to end the bloodshed in Syria.
