Media Release: Mary Robinson and Helen Clark react to the steps announced by the UK and other governments to ban trade with Israeli settlements.

The measures targeting illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank announced by the UK, France, Canada and nine other governments are an essential response to systematic violations of international law.

The Netanyahu government’s deliberate destruction of the two-state solution through settlement expansion, and the ethnic cleansing carried about by Israeli settlers, cannot go unchecked.

Those who trade with or provide financial, construction, advertising, or other services to illegal settlements, including E1, must face serious consequences.

The EU should now follow suit and ban trade with illegal settlements at its next Foreign Affairs Council in October.  A coordinated international defence of the two-state solution is needed now more than ever. Palestine must not be erased.
