The delegation will be led by Jimmy Carter, former President of the United States of America and Nobel Peace Laureate, accompanied by Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Prime Minister of Norway and Deputy Chair of The Elders.

The visit has three main objectives:

To reaffirm The Elders’ conviction that a two-state solution to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is the only viable and just way forward for both peoples;

To highlight the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the need for Palestinian reconciliation and reunification, politically, economically and socially;

To stress The Elders’ consistent and continued support for peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.

The Elders are planning to visit Gaza. They hope to meet political leaders as well as Palestinian refugees and other displaced Gazan residents.

The Elders also hope to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and senior Israeli figures as well as civil society groups and NGOs in both Israel and Palestine.

This is the fourth visit The Elders have made to the region since the group was founded by Nelson Mandela in 2007, reflecting their shared and deep commitment to the aims of peace and reconciliation.
